Spring is when outdoor spaces come alive again — and there's no easier way to transform a patio, deck, or garden corner than with the sound of flowing water. A bamboo fountain takes under 30 minutes to set up and instantly turns any container into a peaceful water feature.
Here's how to get yours going this season.
Step 1: Choose Your Container
You probably already have something that works. Any watertight container at least 8 inches deep can hold a fountain. Popular options:
- Glazed ceramic pots — the most popular choice. The glaze keeps water from seeping through. Look for wide, shallow bowls or tall planters depending on the look you want.
- Stone basins — natural stone pairs beautifully with bamboo for a Japanese-inspired feel.
- Wine barrels — a half whiskey or wine barrel gives a rustic, farmhouse look.
- Large planters — repurpose an existing planter. Just make sure it holds water.
Not sure what works with your fountain size? Check our recommended pots guide for specific container pairings.
Step 2: Pick the Right Fountain Size
Match your fountain to your space:
- 7" spouts — perfect for tabletop setups, small balconies, or indoor use. Pairs with containers 8–12 inches wide.
- 12" spouts — the sweet spot for most patios. Works with medium ceramic pots and stone basins.
- 18" spouts — makes a statement on a large deck or garden. Needs a container at least 14 inches wide.
- 36" Traditional — a full in-ground installation for dedicated garden features.
Our Three-Arm and Adjustable designs are the most popular for outdoor patio setups because they sit low and work well in a wide range of containers.
Step 3: Set It Up
Every fountain kit comes with a bamboo spout and a submersible pump. Here's the process:
- Fill your container with water, leaving about 2 inches from the rim
- Place the pump at the bottom of the container and connect the tubing
- Rest the bamboo spout on the rim of the container — adjustable models let you dial in the height
- Plug in the pump and adjust the flow rate using the dial on the pump
- Add river rocks around the base to hide the pump and reduce splashing
That's it. The whole setup takes about 15–20 minutes, and most of that is arranging rocks.
Spring-Specific Tips
A few things to keep in mind as you set up for the season:
Placement
Put your fountain where you'll actually hear it — near a seating area, by a door you leave open, or on a porch where you have morning coffee. The sound carries further than you'd expect, so you don't need it right next to your chair.
Water Care
Spring pollen and debris will find their way into outdoor water features. Keep it clean by:
- Topping off water regularly (evaporation increases in warmer weather)
- Using distilled water if possible to reduce mineral buildup
- Adding a small amount of fountain cleaner or a few drops of white vinegar monthly
- Clearing leaves and debris weekly
Sun and Shade
Bamboo does well in partial shade. Direct, all-day sun can dry out the bamboo over time — a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal. This also reduces algae growth in the water.
Wind
If your patio is windy, choose a lower-profile fountain like the Three-Arm style. The low arc keeps water contained even on breezy days.
Why Spring Is the Best Time
Spring is peak outdoor setup season for good reason:
- Mild temperatures make it comfortable to spend time arranging your setup
- Garden centers stock containers — you'll have the best selection of pots and basins right now
- You get the whole season to enjoy it before fall
- Entertaining season starts — a fountain is an instant conversation piece for spring and summer gatherings
