12-Inch vs 18-Inch Bamboo Fountain: Which Size Should You Choose?

The 12" and 18" are our two most popular sizes for outdoor use, and people often go back and forth between them. Here's a straightforward comparison to help you decide.

The Quick Answer

  • Go 12" if your container is 12–16 inches wide, your patio is small to medium, or you want a subtler presence
  • Go 18" if your container is 16+ inches wide, you have a larger outdoor space, or you want a statement piece

Both sizes work with the same pump and produce the same style of water flow — the difference is scale.

Size Comparison

| | 12" Fountain | 18" Fountain | |---|---|---| | Spout width | 12 inches | 18 inches | | Ideal container | 12–16" wide | 16–20"+ wide | | Best for | Most patios, porches, gardens | Large patios, garden beds, entryways | | Sound level | Moderate — fills a seating area | Fuller — carries across a larger space | | Visual weight | Accent piece | Focal point | | Price | $49.99 | $55.99 |

Sound Difference

The 18" produces a noticeably fuller water sound because the water falls from a wider spout and travels slightly further to the container surface. If you're using your fountain primarily for noise masking — drowning out traffic, neighbors, or street noise — the 18" gives you more acoustic coverage.

The 12" is quieter and more contained. It's the better choice if you want background ambiance rather than a prominent water sound, or if you're using it near a window or door where too much sound could be intrusive indoors.

Container Fit

This is often the deciding factor. If you already have a container:

  • 12–16" wide container: The 12" fountain is your match. The arms will rest comfortably on the rim with room to spare.
  • 16–20"+ wide container: The 18" fountain will look proportional. A 12" fountain in a very large container can look undersized.
  • In between (15–17" wide): Either size can work. The 12" will leave more visible water surface; the 18" will span more of the rim.

If you're buying a container to match, our recommended pots page shows specific pairings for each size.

Visual Impact

The 18" fountain has more physical presence. The wider bamboo arms create a stronger silhouette and the fountain reads as a deliberate design feature rather than a small accent.

The 12" is more versatile. It blends into a garden or patio setup without dominating. If your space already has a lot going on — plants, furniture, lighting — the 12" adds water sound without competing for attention.

By Fountain Style

Adjustable

  • 12" Adjustable: The all-around workhorse. Works in more containers and spaces than any other model.
  • 18" Adjustable: A bigger presence with adjustable height. Great for large pots and garden installations.

Three-Arm

  • 12" Three-Arm: Our best seller. The three-arm design sits low and works beautifully in round bowls and planters.
  • 18" Three-Arm: The same elegant design at a larger scale. Fills wider containers proportionally.

Classic

  • 12" Classic: Single-arm design with a refined look. Works in both round and rectangular containers.

When 12" Is the Better Choice

  • Your patio or balcony is under 100 square feet
  • You want the fountain near a window or door (less sound bleed indoors)
  • You already have a medium-sized container (12–16" wide)
  • You prefer the fountain to be one element among many, not the star
  • Indoor use — the 12" is easier to manage inside

When 18" Is the Better Choice

  • You have a larger patio, garden, or entryway
  • You're using the fountain specifically for noise masking
  • You have (or want to buy) a large container — stone basin, half barrel, or 18"+ pot
  • You want the fountain to be the centerpiece of your space
  • You're placing it further from your seating area and want the sound to carry

The Honest Answer

If you're unsure, the 12" is the safer bet. It works in more spaces, fits more containers, and is easier to move or reposition. If you later wish you'd gone bigger, the 18" is always there as an upgrade — and you can repurpose the 12" on a tabletop or give it as a gift.
