Translated as "deer-scarer", the traditional shishi odoshi was designed to frighten deer and wild boar away from agriculture. A wide bamboo spout is balanced across a smaller base, resting on its heavier end, while a smaller spout gently fills it with water. When full, it tips forward to dump out the water, then slowly rocks back to its starting position. This produces a soft clacking sound. Rocking fountains produce a meditative combination of sound and movement.
